Portsmouth NH: On June 13th, Africa comes to the Seacoast once again as RAIN welcomes rising Malian star Fatoumata Diawara at The Music Hall to celebrate RAIN’s work bringing education and livelhioods to Niger.
Fatoumata will headline, opened by the West African percussion sounds of the Randy Armstrong World Fusion Trio, with Jose Duque and Volker Nahrmann. Randy Armstrong will lead a West African drumming workshop for high school students before the concert along with Fatoumata.
A critically acclaimed singer-songwriter fusing traditional Mali sounds with folk and rock, Fatoumata has created her own unique sound enhanced by West African dance, making her a true tour de force of the stage. Fatoumata is currently on tour for her latest album Fatou. Most recently, she gathered 40 of Mali’s top singers and musicians to produce the album and video Voices United for Mali, expressing peace and solidarity in response to recent events.
Randy Armstrong is the co-founder of Do’a World Music Ensemble and Unu Mondo. He’s performed in the U.S., Canada, Alaska, Belize, India and Ghana. Randy is the recipient of numerous grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the New England Foundation of the Arts.
